A story for Friends

People are often drawn to the dark and creepy and many of my friends have that innate attraction. The short story “A Rose for Emily” offers creepiness that many stories hope to achieve. The story itself is quite creepy as it involves a spinster who kills a man and leaves the body in her bed, sleeping with it every night. This is enhanced through the story’s plot, the order in which the story is told; by telling the story out of order excitement is built up as the reader begins to put the pieces of the story together. There is also a sense of dramatic irony because the speakers, the townspeople, who are telling the story, believe Emily to be strange and possibly crazy but they don’t believe her to be a killer, but they give the reader the clues that lead them to the assumption that Emily was somehow responsible for Homer’s disappearance. Even with the knowledge that Emily was somehow responsible for Homer’s disappearance there is still a huge shock factor at the end of the story when the body is discovered. It is a truly captivating and shocking story that is a very entertaining story to read.

The Narrator's Facebook

In recent years the trend of expressing personality through facebook has become a popular trend amongst a wide variety of people. Both the young and the old are now loging on to the internet in order to connect with people, make plans, and show themselves as a person in very distinct ways. Like anyone else, the narrator from “Bartleby the scrivener” has his own distinct character, and if her were real and were to have a facebook his would be unique to him.

Facebook facilitates socialization. The narrator would make use of the communicative ability of facebook. His facebook would be a way to do business by talking to clients and important figures and giving orders to his employees. Work that needs to be done and things that employees need to remember would be sent through messaging, and social gatherings as well as important work and church meetings would be stored under his events. All of these clients, judges and employees would be his facebook “friends” including Turkey, Nippers, Ginger Nut, and John Jacob Astor. The narrator would also strengthen the relationships he has with important people like John Jacob Astor.

Because the narrator has several employees and is a naturally curious and concerned person, he would also use facebook as a way of checking into his employees’ lives. By checking on his employees’ news feeds, he could tell how temperamental Nippers will be in the morning by seeing if he had indigestion or was unable to sleep the previous night. The narrator could make many inquiries into the lives of his “friends” and attempt to improve their misfortunes. Constant attempts to do good deeds, by the narrator, would lead to nominations in applications such as nicest person, most lovable person, and best friend. He would also join causes such as ending world hunger and poverty showing his concern for the well being of others.
